Last night's Emergency Town Hall Meeting was an event that brought about many residents along the Rockaway Peninsula. City and State agencies were in attendance: Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, NYC Office of Emergency Management, Homeland Security, DOT, DEP, Build it Back and NYC Dep't of Design and Construction. Elected officials such as Councilmember Brooks-Powers, Councilmember Ariola, Assemblymember Anderson, Senator Sanders, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and representatives from Congressman Meeks office and Assemblymember Amato were also in attendance.
It was a pleasure to see so many people speak up and speak out about the damages to their homes, apartments, vehicles and the like. Not to mention, there were some residents that were actually giving advice and plans on how to mitigate the water from Jamaica Bay. What wasn't a pleasure was the local and state agencies when we requested a plan for the Peninsula and no one had a plan for us. As per the ACOE we won't see any relief at least 4 years from now and according to NYC OEM their work will extend upwards to 10 years. Not one agency came with a plan for us that would take immediate effect. We must stay vigilant and continue to reach out to our local and state elected officials to stay on top of these agencies or we will be swimming in the water the next time it floods. Be sure to visit our website to gain access to all the local and state officials and other pertinent information. Below is a link that was given out by Councilmember Brooks-Powers office to sign up to register for the event but in the form are some questions about Build it Back. If you are currently having issues with this program, please fill out the link below as our Councilmember will be holding them accountable by attending to our needs and fixing the mess that some of us are still going through. As always, pls pass this email on to those who may need it. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for reading and remember to always stay vigilant!
