A friendly reminder, this weekend we will host two Community Budget Briefings in the district, providing an update on the recently adopted City budget. While this year was a difficult budget the New York City Council was able to restore much needed critical services. Feel free to attend either session and be sure to share this information with your neighbors, family and friends.

We also would like to share the following from Partnerships for Parks (a public-private partnership between NYC Parks and City Parks Foundation), which may be of interest to some of our local grassroots organizations/groups working in the district:

On Thursday, June 22nd, Partnerships for Parks launched the 2023 NYC Green Fund Grassroots grant program, which seeks to support an equitable and resilient network of parks and open spaces to benefit the well-being of all New Yorkers.

The application deadline is Monday, July 31, 2023 at 11:59 a.m. ET.

Organizations with annual operating budgets of $175,000 or less will be awarded one- or two-year grants between $1,000 and $40,000 per year. An organization does not need to have 501(c)(3) status to apply.

This new initiative provides support for a range of programming areas including

  • open space stewardship

  • environmental action

  • organizational development

  • health and wellness

  • youth development

  • live arts and culture

With direct funding and technical assistance, diverse community groups will receive support in their work to activate and enrich parks and open spaces across NYC. For more information, please review the following materials:

In case you missed it, City’s First Readers – A Resource for Families of Children 0-5 (citysfirstreaders.com) provides some amazing online activities you can check out with your young ones.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office if we can be of any assistance.

Legislative Corner

This past week the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced several changes within the system that will impact residents across our district. I am dismayed at the decision by the MTA to sunset the Atlantic Ticket, placing an economic hardship on many commuters that rely on this discounted rate from Southeast Queens to Brooklyn. I have urged the MTA to reconsider this decision. They also announced a fare increase that will go into affect in August. With all of this in mind, we look forward to hearing from the MTA on Congestion Pricing, that passed its final federal hurdle, and the fiscal future. Please mark your calendars and sign up to testify.
