The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for the Jamaica Bay region for Saturday night ~ 11pm. '1-1.5 ft. of inundation above ground level is expected and may cause minor flooding of shore roads and/or properties.'
Forecast Inside Jamaica Bay (Inwood Station)
Expect minor flooding in the lowest-lying streets around Jamaica Bay and during the Saturday evening high tide. This is the current high tide forecast from the Stevens Flood Advisory System, Jamaica Bay @ Inwood (inside Jamaica Bay):
Saturday, 3/11/23, 11:05 pm, 7.68 ft MLLW, 1.83 ft. above mean higher high water (MHHW) ('minor flood')* A similar high tide of 7.8 ft. MLLW caused 13.6 inches of flooding on Beach 84th near the bay in the Rockaways, and 6.5 inches on Russell St. in Hamilton Beach. For reference, this forecast is 2 ft. LESS water than Winter Storm Elliot on Dec. 23rd , which reached 9.8 ft. MLLW. So we are only expecting 'nuisance' flooding, it is not a major flood event. You may consider moving your car if you are located on a super low-lying block like Beach 84th.
Monday, 3/13/23, 12:55 am, 7.28 MLLW, 1.4 ft. above MHHW ('near flood') A similar tide of 7.2 ft. above MLLW caused 12 inches of flooding on Beach 84th near the bay in the Rockaways and 5.5 inches on Russell St. in Hamilton Beach
Tuesday, 3/14/23, 1.35, 7.74 MLLW, 1.82 ft. above MHHW ('minor flood') - this will be similar to Saturday evening. A similar high tide of 7.8 ft. MLLW caused 13.6 inches of flooding on Beach 84th near the bay in the Rockaways, and 6.5 incheson Russell St. in Hamilton Beach.
Kings Point (closest gauge for City Island, Locust Point, the Bronx etc.):
Saturday, 3/11/23, 1:00 pm, 9.06 MLLW, 1.27 ft. MHHW (near flood)
Sunday, 3/12/23, 1:30 am, 9.77 MLLW, 1.98 ft. MHHW (near flood)
Monday, 3/13/23, 3:12 am, 9.54 MLLW, 1.75 ft. MHHW (near flood)
Tuesday, 3/14/23, 4:00 am, 10.08 MLLW, 2.29 ft. MHHW (minor flood) - Similar to March 4th flooding, which did have documented minor street flooding in City Island, when combined with rain.
Take care and have a great weekend! Let me know if you have any questions.
